Febuary - Amethyst
Meaning: Sincerity
The folklore associated with the Amethyst says it will grant the wearer peace of mind, tranquility and sincerity. It’s also called the "sobriety stone," and was once believed to discourage drunkenness and encourage healing from other addictions. The word "amethyst" actually comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "remedy for drunkenness".
Amethysts are available in many cuts, shapes and hues of purple. Combining dark and light tones of the jewel (called banding) is quite popular, as well as combining it in a setting with citrine, its sibling quartz. It’s recommended that amethyst jewelry be given for a second wedding anniversary.
The amethyst’s pale lilac, deep violet or red-violet color became symbolic with wealth and power. The dyes used to create purple material were extremely expensive so only royalty could afford wearing the color. Now the amethyst birthstone is found in many fashion accessories and jewelry for all budgets. And since it’s a very durable stone, it’s likely to stick around to become a collectible antique no matter how much the wearer loves the jeweled accessory.
