Diamonds, like all gemstones, are valued by four categories known as the "4 Cs"—cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

A white diamond is judged by its color, or more appropriately—absence of color, and any yellow or brown tint devalues the diamond. Judging a diamond’s clarity refers to how many or the lack of inclusions (or flaws) are in the diamond. Of course the best diamonds are completely flawless. Those diamonds are extremely rare, and therefore the most valuable. And carat weight refers to the diamond’s size. Therefore, the larger the diamond, judged with the other three "Cs," the more expensive the diamond.

Diamonds also have been found in reds, blues and greens, and the deepest hues of these diamonds are extremely valuable. Diamonds are also the hardest known substance on earth. They’ll scratch other jewels, so it’s important to protect the diamond jewelry when they’re stored.
